The reduction of health disparities to improve health outcomes is a complex challenge that extends well beyond traditional health care settings. Raingruber (2017) mentions that a number of factors may contribute to health disparities, such as geographic area, place of birth, gender, age, income, education, occupation, health insurance coverage, sexual orientation, disability, and cultural and linguistic barriers. There are many factors that affect our health, including those relating to the individual, family, community, society, and culture, these all interact and influence each other. Interventions to reduce health disparities have mainly emphasized changing individual and interpersonal behavior which has had limited impact on sustained improvements in health or changing health disparities (Brown et al., 2019). One of the health disparities that we are dealing with in the United States is the obesity epidemic. A number of lifestyle, health-related, and environmental factors are responsible for the global obesity widespread problem, including poor eating habits and sedentary behavior (Wang et al., 2020). In the case of the obesity disparity, It is unlikely that nutrition and physical activity interventions will succeed when food and social environments, such as little to no open spaces, unsafe recreational areas, easy access to low-cost, calorie-dense food options, and poverty pose severe barriers to maintaining healthy diets and active lifestyles on an individual basis.
It is imperative to remember that to achieve a reduction on health disparities there needs to be a change not only at the individual level, but also in our society. If an individual, when going to have a meal does not have healthy option in the menu, most likely that person will not make the best decision when it comes to healthy food consumption. Masters prepared nurses can use the Ecological Framework which provides a comprehensive understanding of health behaviors and health outcomes within and across populations by taking into account biological, social, cultural, and environmental determinants of health (Raingruber, 2017). But most importantly as a masters prepared nurse there needs to be an understanding of one own standing. A clear view of ones own personal view of the world, and personal vias. By doing so, there is an openness to different kinds of individual who are looking for a better way of life and someone that can connect to them in a deeper level.
