MTSU Teaching Plan for Type2 Diabetes Patient Paper

MTSU Teaching Plan for Type2 Diabetes Patient Paper

Description

Teaching Plan Project submitted to dropbox

Introduction:
Patients have a variety of learning needs. Learning is evidenced by a change in
behavior (Blais & Hayes, 2010). Nurses have a responsibility to their patient to
identify these learning needs and to teach them effective ways of change.

According to the American Nurse Association (ANA), there is a standard related to
the nurse’s personal teaching and learning competency (ANA, 2010). Standard 8
states that the nurse “attains knowledge and competence that reflects current
nursing practice” (ANA, 2010, p. 56). This knowledge can then be disseminated to
patients in a manner that is conducive to learning for the individual.

The purpose of this assignment is to:

? Apply information on Type II diabetes to a teaching plan

? Write two learning goals for the patient with Type II diabetes

? Develop and implement a teaching plan based on Blooms domains of
learning

? Create a method to evaluate patient learning

Teaching Plan:

Type II diabetes has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. Patients
with Type II diabetes need to know how to care for themselves and manage their
disease process. The class will be divided into two groups and each group is to
design a specific part of a teaching plan for the following diabetic patient. Each
group will present a different aspect of the teaching plan. Part of a teaching plan
is deciding what the important things are for the patient to learn. Therefore, each group must develop two learning outcomes for their portion of the plan. Learning

outcomes must be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time-
specific). Some verbs that lend themselves to good learning outcomes are:

• List

• Define

• Explain

• State

• Demonstrate

• Summarize

“Understand” is not a good verb to use for learning outcomes because it is almost
impossible to measure. It is too abstract-you cannot see or hear it. A patient will
say, “Yes, I understand” but there is no validation. Whereas, listing the most
common complications validates learning.

Patient Information:

Mrs. Ortex, an obese Hispanic female was recently diagnosed with Type II
diabetes. She does speak English, but has some difficulty in understanding her
diagnosis. She has been prescribed Metformin 500mg po BID, glyburide 2.5mg po
daily and sliding scale insulin prn before meals and bedtime. She has been
instructed to begin an 1800 calorie ADA diet.

Group 2 will include:

? The usual treatment for Type II diabetes, including self-monitoring of blood
glucose, medication (her current medications), diet and exercise.

? Acute and chronic complications- be sure to organize them into

macrovascular, microvascular and neuropathies (This is my part of the assignment)
? Foot care

? When to seek medical attention & sick day rules

You will present your teaching plans on the discussion board using PowerPoint
presentations. **Remember, you are teaching a non-medical person, so keep it in
terms she will understand.
