1
1. An economic/social/political system that is based on the ownership of human beings for production, not only as commodities, but also perceived as of an inferior race (slaves lost their customary rights as human beings),
2. Slaves’ desires to be free. Slaves were not bystanders in the fight to end slavery, but actively fought for their freedom.
These theories will be the foundation of understanding and analyzing Slavery and Freedom in the Americas.
Assignments:
In this assignment, we want to concentrate on The Transatlantic Slave Trade and The Middle Passage to analyze the treatment of the slaves after they were captured in Africa; in the holding pens; and the transportation of these captives to the New World. We want to concentrate on firsthand [documented] accounts on the events above. In this analysis, we want to evaluate the theory that chattel slavery was indeed based on ownership of human beings, not only as commodities, but also perceived as of an inferior race.
Research (find), describe, and analyze firsthand [documented] accounts (personal narrations and/or writings of original accounts) of how slaves were treated from their capture in Africa to their seasoning in the Americas. Your descriptions and analysis must evaluate firsthand accounts from all the three groups below:
(i) slaves;
(ii) slave traders; and
(iii) captains and/or their logs.
The goal of this assignment is to use these firsthand accounts to give an unbiased analysis of the treatment as either humane or inhumane. Your analysis must also evaluate the nature of the selling and buying of these Africans to see how similar it is to that of a commodity. This way, you should be able to analyze the first theory of Chattel Slavery given in Week #2 Class Notes and Homework Highlights above.
