University of Phoenix Humanities Discussion

University of Phoenix Humanities Discussion

Description

each paragraph should be a minmimm of 6 sentenses.

  • Paragraph 1# The Declaration of Independence: https://www.archives.gov/founding-docs/declaration-transcript (Links to an external site.)
  • How long has it been since you have read “The Declaration of Independence”? If you are anything like me, reading it as an adult is kind of a revelation. So, THAT’S what Jefferson was up to, right? Select two of the following to consider:
What surprises you about the document?
What is its purpose? Who is the audience for the document? What is its main point?
What section represents a hope for “American” values?
  • Paragraph 2# A Short History of the American Dream concept: http://americanradioworks.publicradio.org/features/americandream/a1.html (Links to an external site.)
  • In this history, we learn what the dream is and how its meaning has evolved over time. Talk to your friends and family about the American dream and each will probably have a different idea. Early on in this nation’s development, we read of the hopes of the founding fathers for this nation and its people. Alexis deToqueville, writing in the early 1800s, was stunned by what he called the “charm of anticipated success” that seemed to power the American people. When Adams coined the phrase in 1931, I think the American dream was already an accepted idea. America is a place where each person has the right to pursue happiness. America is a place where through hard work, one can make a better life for oneself and one’s family. Anticipated success is all over these ideas.
  • 2. Select one section of this brief history that you were most interested in, and take it up in your post to your peers:
  • Describe your section and tell us your impressions. Why have you zeroed in on this section? What more do you want to know? How does this section provide a light for where you think we are today?
  • Paragraph 3# Ralph Waldo Emerson’s (pdf) Philosophy makes us think, go back, and think again. Try to read at least a dozen pages of this essay, written almost two hundred years ago. That exposure will give you a fine idea of what Emerson is about.
  • 3. Select one or two of the following to discuss in your post:
    • What does it take to be a man or woman in Emerson’s thinking?
    • Why is living for others not a good idea?
    • What wrong with going along with others, using the path of least resistance in life?
    • How do we know what we are worth and what we are even capable of in your opinion?
    • How would Emerson view our material world?
    • Finally, select a quote or two quotes you would like to discuss — either because you agree with them or because you do not. Post these ideas and comment. Ask your peers to comment as well.

There is a LOT to think about in these three texts. Please ensure that your discussion board post reveals your voice and your ideas.
