Kathie 500: The American population is gradually becoming more dominated by the older population meaning that by the year 2020, more than 20 percent of the people will be age 65 or older. Individuals over the age of 85 make up the fastest-growing group (Vespa et al., 2018). This trend indicates a more significant proportion of the elderly suffering from long-term chronic conditions, challenging the healthcare system’s ability to provide efficient care. Nurses are in an excellent position to communicate with older persons about self-care measures for preventing future illness while preserving independence, functioning, and mental and physical health. Nurses have traditionally been leaders in elder care and will continue to play an essential role in health promotion and tackling geriatric healthcare concerns in the coming years. Diversity is another important factor in patient demographic change. Nurses must learn to adjust their practice to varied cultural values and beliefs because diversity impacts the nature of illness and disease and morbidity and mortality. It is not an easy effort to provide high-quality nursing care to an aging, diverse population, but it is one of the most critical tasks of nurses today. In a rapidly changing culture, nurses will continue to practice traditional preventive care and holistic well-being. They will be expected to give leadership in managing shifts in patient demographics. To address the diverse needs of various patient populations, nurses need to have a wide range of skills. The ability of nurses to develop their practice and broaden their basic knowledge to manage the issues associated with caring for older persons and diverse cultures is critical to the future of the healthcare delivery system.
Maria 500: Future issues and nursing practice has changed and will continue to change with time. New research and innovations are being developed in nursing every year. Nursing practice within the cultural aspect has changed to integrate different cultures, beliefs, races, and values. A nurse needs to be competent in cultural diversity to be able to provide care to patients based on their cultural needs. Patients come from different diverse backgrounds and nurses should work with the interdisciplinary team to provide appropriate care for the patients to promote positive health outcomes. Health promotion will continue to be a big part of nursing practice to promote patients holistic wellbeing. According to McEwen and Wills (2017), nurses should be able to teach prevention and health promotion activities, educate patients about lifestyle and its effect on health, use community resources to enhance care, and advocate for policy change to promote health (pp.525). Communication methods have changed due to advanced technologies. The use of telehealth will continue to be an important tool for reaching patients. Informatics has given the healthcare system a way to have constant communication with patients and caregivers and provide the best care possible. Cultural diversity, health promotion, and communication have all helped advance and improve the healthcare system and the service given to the patients. Nurses will continue to learn and help develop new technologies to improve care. Advanced practice nurses need to be prepared to function in some type of community-based health care system. They must be able to collaborate and cooperate within a multidisciplinary team and demonstrate critical thinking and decision-making capabilities. They will be asked to resolve conflicts and effect health care at both the individual and aggregate levels (McEwen & Wills, 2017, pp. 524).
