1 Mistletoe which is also known by the Latin name of Vicsum album has long been considered to have unusual characteristics. 2 Today it is known as the plant that provides an excuse to kiss someone but its reputation as a plant with special powers goes back to the Bronze Age. 3 Because it seems to appear out of nowhere the ancient Druids thought the plant was sent from heaven. 4 In fact it is a parasite that sinks its rootlike feelers into the top of a tree and then it literally sucks the life juices out of it. 5 Growing slowly ruthlessly and patiently it does not die until the tree that it is attached to dies. 6 Druid priests would climb the tree and harvest the mistletoe which was believed to cure toothache epilepsy and even infertility. 7 Although researchers have recently found that mistletoe leaf extract might inhibit the growth of cancer cells we also know that mistletoe is poisonous. 8 During the days of the Roman Empire mistletoe was regarded as a symbol of peace. 9 Standing under a sprig of the plant enemies would throw away their weapons declare a truce and embrace. 10 The origin of todays custom of kissing under the mistletoe is not clear; however it may derive from the Norwegian story of Frigga who kissed everyone who walked under the mistletoe when her son came back to life.
