SYG 2010 AU Government Restrictions & Social Hostility Are Mutually Reinforcing Essay

MODULE 3 ESSAY ASSIGNMENT

First, based on the assigned textbook readings, please answer the following questions:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/27/us-far-right-violence-terrorist-threat-analysis

1. Define social hostility. What does it mean that “government restrictions and social hostility are mutually reinforcing”? Please explain and support your explanation with examples from the textbook. (Your answer should be 200-250 words long).

2. According the textbook, in the United States, the level of social hostility is high and hate group crimes are on the rise (see textbook: Table 6-2). Based on the textbook readings, describe the social factors/forces that foster social hostility and hate crimes. For example, how do religious, political and/or racist ideologies contribute to the rise in hate groups? Support your answer with examples. (Your answer should be 250-300 words long).

Second, after reading the Guardian article and watching the PBS film, please answer the following questions:

https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/documenting-hate-new-american-nazis/

3. Summarize the film and explain what it is about. In your summary, describe the groups and individuals depicted in the film (including James Mason). How do they operate? What are their beliefs? Whom do they hate and why? Do they see themselves as terrorists? What is the key insight abut hate groups that you’ve gained from this film? (Your answer should be 300-350 words long).

4. The assigned readings and film address various strategies to combat hate groups and prevent hate crimes. Which of these strategies would you consider to be most effective? Please describe a least two and explain why they might be effective. For example, should federal authorities prioritize the investigation of the violent crimes of far right extremists and prosecute them using existing laws or should they focus on designating such groups as domestic terrorist organizations? What are the potential implications of such government restrictions (i.e., terrorist group designations) for civil liberties? Do you agree with Ward that in order to fight hate crimes,” rather than new laws, we need a responsible leadership that is actually willing to use the tools that are already on hand.” Please explain why or why not? (Your answer should be 300-350 words long).

REQUIRED FORMAT: This essay assignment should be 1050 – 1250 words long, typed single-spaced with normal font size (11-12 points). Your answers to the posed questions should be numbered (1, 2, 3, & 4), structured in into paragraphs and based on the assigned Applied Learning Tasks only. Turnitin is enabled for this assignment. For your essay to be original, avoid using direct quotations (i.e., 10% or less). Submit your essay as a Microsoft Word file. Be sure to answer all questions and correct all spelling and grammatical errors.

This assignment is due on Friday, October 9. The grades will be posted within 10 days after the module closing date.
