I’m working on a american studies multi-part question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
- According to, The Neighborhood Effect, families that moved to safer and better-off areas “improved their health in ways that were quite profound,” including reductions in obesity and diabetes, says Lawrence F. Katz, a Harvard economist who is principal investigator of the project’s long-run study. They showed less depression, Katz says, and “very large increases in happiness.” Yet the program failed to improve other key measures, like the earnings and employment rate of adults and the educational achievement of children.
Why? What long-term impact does the neighborhood of which one lives have on their economic future, specifically the types of jobs they are able or not able to obtain? Use examples from the reading to substantiate your response.
2.Harvards Ronald Ferguson, director of The Achievement Gap Initiative at Harvard University, says there is progress being made, there are encouraging examples to emulate, that an early start is critical, and that a lot of hard work lies ahead. But he also says, Theres nothing more important we can do.”
Explain what he means by this phrase? Use examples from the video to further explain your response.
3. From the video, How to Close the Academic Achievement Gap thats Hurting America, discuss one important aspect from this short clip that you believe is impacting the overall economic growth for African Americans. Why was this factor so significant for you
4. Pretend that you serve as a representative from a local school district. Within your community statistics have shown that standardized test scores have not improved for African-American children grades K-5. As an elected official, what, if anything, could you or should you do to improve the educational attainment of these children?
5. Develop policy that will have lasting effects on the young African American children living in the community you serve. Present your plan in an executive summary report to the school board (no shorter than three paragraphs). A good plan will be practical, will have measurable results, and will be politically savvy.
